In Memory of Alfred

Alfred Guenigault D-Day veteran

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Private Alfred Guenigault, a true hero and a cherished member of our Helping Homeless Veterans UK family.

Alfred was one of the first Allied soldiers to set foot in Normandy on June 6, 1944, serving bravely as in the Airborne Division. He landed at Pegasus Bridge (then known as Bénouville Bridge) at 12:30 am, part of a daring glider assault that secured a crucial river crossing for the invasion of France. During the landings, Alfred was shot and wounded by a German sniper while protecting French civilians, showcasing his selfless courage.

Over the past 11 months, our charity had the privilege of getting to know Alfred and his family intimately. His stories from the D-Day Landings were nothing short of awe-inspiring, and we listened and were gripped as he recounted the harrowing moments of that pivotal day. Alfred’s resilience and determination were evident in every word he shared.

Despite facing countless challenges, such as skin and prostate cancer and being forced to move into a tiny hostel, Alfred never lost hope. Our charity stood by him when others faltered, battling bureaucratic obstacles for six long months until we secured a place that he could finally call home. The broken promises from politicians and charities alike left Alfred and his family shattered, but we remained steadfast in our commitment to honour his service and sacrifice.

Rest in Peace, Alfred. You are a true hero. Until we meet again, your legacy lives on in our hearts.

PS - As we mourn the loss of this valiant veteran, let us also remember the stark reality: While political parties bask in the glory of our D-Day heroes, some of these very leaders left a 99-year-old D-Day Veteran languishing in a stinking hostel for 6-months.

Alfred’s indomitable spirit will forever inspire us to fight for justice, compassion, and dignity for all our veterans.

About Us

Helping Homeless Veterans UK started as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in September 2019. Less than two years later, we became a registered charity with the Charities Commission (number 1195521).

With many years of experience of engaging with Local Authorities using legislation to help house our homeless veterans, there was a definite need for our organisation which has been a welcome addition to the Veterans Community.

We are a Charity that relies solely on donations from the general public as well as grants from companies and organisations which allow us to provide the complete package for those that need our assistance.

100% of all public donations are spent on helping our veterans and none of our team are salaried. We have a team of trustees, ambassadors and volunteers who dedicate their free time to helping our country's homeless veterans.
